JERA, Dell and RHAELM unveil planned US $ 15 billion AI infrastructure investment
JERA, Japan’ s largest power generator, Dell Technologies, a global technology leader, and RHAELM Holdings, a sovereign AI infrastructure developer, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop a standardised framework for building AI infrastructure at national scale in Japan. This model is planned for the first project in Chiba for which Apollo Global Management intends to serve as a strategic investment and financing partner for RHAELM.
Bringing together highly reliable power generation with AI computing technology and infrastructure development expertise, the collaboration aims to address one of the key constraints on the rapid deployment of AI computing capacity across Japan: the need to design and integrate power generation, electrical infrastructure, cooling and AI compute on a project-by-project basis. The companies will work to create a standardised, repeatable and scalable model from the outset, reducing the lengthy lead time and complexity involved in developing each project independently. The parties intend to establish the model first in Japan and, over time, explore opportunities to apply it in other markets.
Japan’ s ability to scale AI infrastructure at speed will depend on reliable gas-fired generation and a resilient LNG value chain. The collaboration brings together JERA’ s integrated capabilities across LNG procurement, shipping, import and regasification and power generation, Dell Technologies’ standardised, rack-scale AI infrastructure and RHAELM’ s data centre development and delivery capabilities. Together, the parties aim to establish integrated model connecting LNG supply with AI computing for deployment in Japan and globally.
Google and Constellation announce major nuclear power agreement
Google and Constellation Energy have announced a longterm strategic clean energy collaboration to bring 890 megawatts( MW) of new, reliable nuclear capacity onto the PJM Interconnection grid to meet growing demand and increase grid reliability. The PJM Interconnection co-ordinates the generation and transmission of electricity across a multi-state region.
The 20-year power purchase agreement will enable investments in new equipment and technology at 11 Constellation-owned nuclear units in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, increasing thermal and electrical efficiency to unlock additional reliable, firm power to serve the grid. This capacity is entirely new, expanding total electricity generation available across the PJM footprint. The agreement helps sustain roughly 4,400 existing jobs, creates approximately 7,200 new construction jobs during the building period and represents more than US $ 4.3 billion of new investment by Constellation.
Constellation also selected Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise under an expanded five-year technology alliance to establish an‘ AI for energy’ blueprint that will accelerate capacity delivery, optimise asset dispatch and protect critical infrastructure. For communities served by Constellation Energy, the aim is to use AI to reduce the costs of new infrastructure, improve performance, ensure enough power is generated to meet rising demand and safeguard the energy grid they rely on.
In addition to expanding nuclear generation, the companies entered into a 15-year energy supply agreement for an additional 2,700 MWs in PJM’ s fleet. This financial structure ensures that Constellation’ s operating generation assets continue to deliver energy and capacity to the PJM market.
