Agentic AI is the next step for automation. Traditional automation, delivered through technologies such as robotic process automation( RPA), has evolved rapidly in the past few years thanks to artificial intelligence( AI). Generative AI took the lead, but now there’ s new tech in town and the potential to reimagine work is off the scale.

Think of agentic AI as enabling a sliding scale toward more autonomous work( essentially enabling higher levels of work to be done without human intervention or action), where agents can accomplish increasingly more complex activities depending on their level of AI capabilities.

What began as RPA-based digital workers automating prescribed tasks designed by humans is now developing into a blend of semiautonomous agents. In the future, those will evolve into fully autonomous agents that can think and act on their own, where the workflow isn’ t necessarily designed by a person, but by AI deciding how to achieve those objectives in the best way possible.
