Confidence leads to leadership, not the other way around
Before I became a leader, I made the mistake of thinking that when you get that FD or CFO leadership role, you automatically become confident because you’ ve got a fancy new title. However, speaking from experience, the confidence doesn’ t just appear. It is something you need to work on yourself.
Somebody must have believed in me to give me that role. Maybe they thought they’ d give me a chance, or they saw something in me that perhaps I don’ t see.
My confidence was very low early in my finance leadership career. I would sit in leadership team meetings with 20 other people in the room. Lots of conversation was happening, but unless people spoke to me specifically about finance
