Introduction

The story begins with the belief that the network exists to deliver applications and services that businesses need . While legacy network vendors are always happy to sell you another box to get there – for firewalls , load balancing , deep packet inspection , and tunnels – the hardware-centric model their business is built on means more complexity , compromise , and cost for you . This middlebox-driven approach makes it hard to run new services and applications across diverse networks and within the hybrid cloud . It makes it a challenge to support video-intensive workloads , or properly connect today ’ s mobile workforce .
